Profile

Reiko Chono

Reiko Chono is a Japanese painter.
She depicts the beauty of Japanese women who have survived with suppleness and strength. After working on several Western-style paintings and sculptures, she switched to Japanese-style painting. She specializes in realistic depictions of women by incorporating grisaille, an oil painting technique, into her Japanese paintings. Her creative work is based on the war experiences she was told about by her grandfather, the abuse she suffered as a child, and the joy of meeting people involved in the arts. She won the Zacchi prize at the 17th Salon International de Paris in 2009 and won the Excellence Award at “The 41st Japanese Today’s Visual Arts Exhibition” in 2010.
